My family carts their Indian clothes back and forth from Chicago to Mumbai to get them washed. Dry cleaners in the states don’t know what to do with our clothes. The pieces come back with these little fabric tags with dhobi (washerwoman/washerman) shorthand on them. The writing is unintelligible, but the momento contains a whole world - my immigrant world.
I found this green jacket on the street during the pandemic and doctored it up in Photoshop. It reminded me of the parts of our identities we throw away.
A print for garments incorporating the green jacket graphic above.

AUNTY design on custom sweatshirt. In South Asian communities, all adult women are referred to as aunty, no matter the relation, weaving a tight fabric of interconnectedness. Aunties hold the community together. Sometimes the term is referred to derogatorily, as many terms for women tend to be. Here aunty is reclaimed for anyone who loves where they come from. We should all be aunties.
